SIX STEPS OF WATER CONSERVATION

  • Step one – Get a water meter Every year about 28,000 people ask Anglian Water to put them on a meter, keen to benefit from savings which, on average, add up to about £100 a year. Knowing they are being charged for what they use – and being able to see just how much they are using – means people start being more careful. You can switch to a meter at any time by visiting www.anglianwater.co.uk and if you find that you don’t like it then you can swap back at anytime in the first two years.

  • Step two – Love ?your shower When you get up in the morning and get ready for the day ahead one simple change could save you 40 litres of water. Astonishingly, the average bath uses 80 litres of water! By changing your routine to have nice refreshing showers you could be using just half as much.

  • Step three – Don’t run Most people clean their teeth twice everyday. When you brush yours do you leave the tap running? If you do you’ll be wasting almost 18 litres each time you brush. By turning the tap while you brush, you’ll only use around a litre.

  • Step four – Chill out The average person should drink about two litres of water each day – do you think you get anywhere near that? If you like a nice cold drink with your dinner don’t run the tap until it’s chilled. Why not keep a jug in the fridge, so when you want a drink it’s already cold and refreshing?

  • Step five – Recycle Most of us are now regular recyclers, but we tend not to recycle our dirty water. By using a washing up bowl instead of the sink we not only use less water but we can take the left over water to use on some of our hardy garden plants! We call this ‘grey water’ – and it’s the most natural recycling process.

  • Step six – Use only what we need Most of us do love a good cuppa but we can even make savings here. By only filling the kettle with as much water as you need – not to the brim – you’ll use less water and to sweeten the deal you will make a saving on your energy bill as well.
